GM Simultaneous Exhibition with Chris Ward GM at Petts Wood Chess Club

A big thank you to Petts Wood Chess Club for hosting this wonderful annual event and also to the very amiable Chris Ward GM who gives his time every year to encourage juniors and adults to play chess!

Lots of children and adults came along to play and watch the chess games against Chris. Amongst the challengers were many Amazikidz students past and present, including Kiran Shiatis, Viktor Jamroz, Huseyin Gueriane and Lev Mann.

Everyone played well and a few even managed to draw against Chris! Both Kiran Shiatis and Viktor Jamroz were included in this number and were even seated next to each other!

Kiran's result was particularly notable as it is his third draw against a GM. When asked for the secret of his success, he replied 'a bit of luck, a bit of skill, but mostly being optimistic and having the opportunity'.

Amazikidz holds its first Secondary Schools Chess Competition

Amazikidz held its first secondary schools chess competition on Thursday 11th February 2016, featuring teams from Judd, Tonbridge and Skinners schools with over 50 players across two sections.

The Cup competition included many county and international players and were made up of six players from each of the three schools. The six strong Judd team, featuring Amazikidz players Kiran Shiatis and Alex Thompson, showed their strength in depth and impressively won all eighteen of their games across the three rounds, with Tonbridge second and Skinners third.

The Skinners Cup Team

The Plate section was open to all children from each of the three schools with the top three players' scores counting towards the overall prize. This section proved extremely close with the Judd narrowly taking a 1 point victory from Tonbridge, with Skinners just one further point behind.

A huge thank you to the Judd for hosting this event and to Mrs Colf for making all the arrangements. Thank you to Mr Myslov from Tonbridge School and Ms Charvat from the Skinners School for organising and brining their teams, to Rohan Shiatis for his excellent arbiting skills, to Vishal Shiatis for helping to organise everyone and to all the excellent helpers on the day. Finally a big thank you to all the players who proudly represented their schools.

  • Simul with GM John Emms: Once again a huge thank you to Grandmaster (GM) John Emms, for taking on the enthusiastic ACES Sevenoaks students in two simultaneous exhibitions on 15 and 22 October 2015. Many of the children put up some stiff opposition, but none more so than Alex Thompson (aged 13, from The Judd) and Kiran Shiatis KCM (aged 11, from The Judd) who both managed to emerge with hard fought draws. The GM, however, retained his overall unbeaten record!Well done once again to all who participated and for putting many of their chess skills into practice. Thank you also to Rohan Shiatis KCM for all his help.

  • Amazikidz Viktor Jamroz and Kiran Shiatis do well in Adult Tournament!

Congratulations to Amazikidz juniors Viktor Jamroz and Kiran Shiatis who both performed fantastically well at Adult Chess Congresses over the Easter break.

Viktor took part in the St Albans Chess Congress on 28th and 29th March. This was Viktor's first ever adult chess congress and he finished a superb third in the U120 section, scoring 4 points from 5 games against opponents who were all graded much higher.

Kiran took part in the Southend Chess Congress on 4th and 5th April and finished a hard fought first in the U120 section, scoring an unbeaten 4.5 points from 5.

These adult chess congresses are long play tournaments. This means that not only are you playing against vastly more experienced players who are often three times your own size, but that each game could go one for over three hours. As such every single game demands a huge amount of concentration and continual focus - not easy when you are still a junior. For two of our Amazikidz juniors to come third and first in such tournaments, is a huge achievement. Congratulations to both Viktor and Kiran!!.

  • GM John Emms Plays ACES Sevenoaks children in Simul!

GM John Emms kindly took on the children of ACES Sevenoaks playing them in simultaneous exhibition on Thursday 29th January and Thursday 5th February 2015. The children fought bravely, but the fast moving GM emerged victorious winning 27 games and drawing just the one - against Kiran Shiatis (aged 11).  Special mention must also go to the following: Charlie Metcalfe, Isaac Handley and Oliver Dobson (for playing strong games), Iris Davies (winning a rook), William Gough (clever tactic), Marius Kobler (defending well against a tactic).

A very big thank you to GM John Emms who was particularly impressed with how well all the children were playing and so how well they were able to put their chess skills into practice. A big well done to everyone. Read more and see more pictures here.
